We can give our warm recommendations to anyone considering going to Kyrgyzstan in general, and with Ecotour in particular! We spent two weeks in some of Ecotour's yurt camps, and it was a highly memorable experience. Ecotour was very flexible and had arranged a programme that suited our wishes perfectly.

New - Double trek: starting in Son-Kul and Karakol (experienced hikers only)

Date: 09/07 – 29/07 2017 Price 1920-euro p.p. if 4 or more participants

This tour of 21 days is for experienced hikers who want to enjoy the beauty of pristine nature far from hectic civilization. These trekking tours are a challenging holiday, ideal for people who can cope physically and enjoy facing up to unpredictable situations. The tour takes place in two different parts of the majestic Tien-Shan Mountains and includes visiting two of the lakes –Issyk-Kul and Son-Kul - that are considered as pearls of the country.

You start your trip with a hike in Konorchok canyons and stay in Sonun yurt camp, where you have the possibility to swim in the lake. Then move onto the east of Issyk-Kul Lake. The first trekking you start from the Karakyz yurt camp, and crossing two passes of over 3500 m you come down to Altyn-Arashan valley famous for its hot springs. You will walk through forests, sometimes-challenging rocky barrens and pass by small lakes. During this trek, you will camp in tents, but porters will help to carry your luggage, as horses are not able to do this part. The luggage has to be maximum of 12 kg p.p.

There are 3 days of driving by car to get from place to place, with a short hike in Skazka canyons and more relaxed days before starting the trekking from Son-Kul lake to Issyk-Kul. In contrast to the first part, you will walk through treeless mountains, vast open alpine pastures where you will meet many herdsmen with their livestock. There will be three passes of 3300-3500m. Whilst trekking you will be camping in tents as well, which will be carried on horse backs together with your luggage.

Walking days are usually between 5 to 8 hours. Our group consists of 4-8 people, 6-12 horses, guides and an interpreter. You need a sleeping bag, isomat, warm clothes, waterproof clothing and very comfortable walking shoes.

Program

Day 1 Departure from your local airport.

Day 2 Arrival at Manas Airport and transfer to the hotel in Bishkek. After a rest and a light lunch sightseeing around Bishkek. Bishkek is a relatively new city built mostly in the Soviet style with wide boulevards, many parks and numerous terraces. You can visit the Old Square from where you can walk through the oldest park in Bishkek – Oak Park and onto the main square Ala-Too. Passing by the National Opera and Ballet Theatre, you get to Victory Square, built for the 40th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War (Second World War). Stay in hotel.

Day 3 By car to the Boom gorge (125km) and from there hike of max 5 hours in the Konorchok Canyon with red sandstone pillars that go on for miles; hence is the name of the canyon, “Never-ending’. One particularly fascinating feature in the canyon is a 2.5-3-million-year-old dormant volcano. Then on to the yurt camp Sonun at the lake. Here you can see a variety of landscape: semi-desert, forest and mountains with beautiful glaciers in the distance, and the lake. In the late afternoon you can go for swimming in the lake. Stay in yurt.

Day 4 To the yurt camp Kara-Kyz (2,000m), located at the far east of Lake Issyk–Kul, where they get much precipitation due to the westerly wind and consequently is known for lush vegetation. We will hike over beautiful mountains slopes with various herbs and flowers and in the forest. Stay in yurt.

Day 5 Start trekking from the yurt camp through the beautiful spruce forest along the mountain river, passing by shepherds living in their yurts or tents. Around 5-6 hours of walking at an altitude of 2,000-2,400m. Camping at the end of the Jergez Valley.

Day 6 Cross the Ailanysh Pass (3,560m) to the Alamaluu Valley (5-6 hours). On the way you have nice views of the Almaluu Valley, waterfall and carpets of flowers. Camping in the forest.

Day 7 6-7 hours of trekking over the Ortok Pass (3,780m) to the Arashan hot springs. We will pass by small mountain lakes, Kyrgyz Jailoo and enjoy the view of the Tashtanbek-Tor Bashy Peak (4,600m). Camping in the Arashan Valley with a small resort consisting of few guesthouses built in the Soviet period; take a bath in hot springs with radon water. Stay in small cottage.

Day 8 Walking on some winding serpentines, we come down to the Arashan Gorge covered with spruce and pine forest on one slope and with various herbs and flowers on the other (3-4hrs). At the beginning of the gorge, the minibus will be waiting for us. By minibus back to Karakol. Stay in guesthouse.

Day 9 By car along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul to Kara-Talaa Village. On the way there will be a short hike in Skaska (Russian for fairy tale). Here, again, there are very impressive rocks formations. Hundreds of years of wind, sun and rain have formed the chalk/limestone hills into weird figures in many different colours. With some imagination you can see castles, animals and other figures from fairy tales in these rocks. Stay with a local family.

Day 10 Driving along the water reservoir we reach Kochkor and partly take the branch of Ancient Silk Road. After the turn from Sary-Bylak the road gets bumpy, on many serpentines we climb Kalmak-Ashuu pass (3,446m) and reach Son-Kul Lake. The lake is on a plateau at 3,100m and surrounded by white topped mountains. In summer the fields around the lake are occupied by the shepherds with their herds but in winter nobody lives here because of the cold. Stay in yurt.

Day 11 Relax around the yurt camp adapting to the altitude and go walking in the surrounding area.

Day 12-19 Walking from Song-Kul to Tuura-Suu. You will cross three passes of 3.300-3.500m. Average altitude - 3.000m. Luggage will be transported by horses and camping in tents. Details of trip on request.
