About tour
This one week programme takes you to some of the most beautiful parts of the country. There will be opportunities to go hiking, horse riding and swimming.
In the yurt camps in the high pastures and in remote mountain villages you will see and experience the reality of nomadic life. During the tour you sleep in yurts, B&Bs and guesthouses. In Bishkek you stay in the Umai Hotel (or similar), not far from the centre of town.
Transportation is in our own minibus and an English or German speaking interpreter will accompany you for the whole tour.
To fully enjoy this tour you need an adventurous attitude and the ability to improvise when necessary. Luxury is not available on this trip – sanitary facilities are very basic, and hot showers are often absent.
The trip will take you to the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul where you will meet a man who hunts with birds of prey and hear local children, accompanied by traditional Kyrgyz instruments, singing. En route there will be a short hike in the stunning Konorchok Canyon.
Day By Day Programme
Here you can find a detailed description of the tour with routes and locations
Day 1 | Departure from your local airport. |
Day 2 | Arrival at Manas Airport and transfer to the Umai Hotel in Bishkek. After a rest and a light lunch sightseeing around Bishkek. Bishkek is a relatively new city built mostly in the Soviet style with wide boulevards, many parks and numerous terraces. The Historical Museum and the Museum of Modern Arts are well worth a visit, but just strolling through town is also a good way to get to know the city. A visit to the Osh Bazaar is a special experience and a good way to get an impression of Kyrgyz life. |
Day 3 | By minibus from Bishkek to Konorchok Canyons (125 km) located in the Boom Gorge. Hiking in the canyons which were formed about one and a half to two million years ago. In that time erosion by wind and water has turned a plateau into gigantic stone pillars, some of which are 400-500 m high. From there we continue to Tuura-Suu, a small mountain village at 2.200 m. We spend the night in the yurt camp just outside the village where a local family will take care of us. This yurt camp is exclusive to Ecotour guests and thus there is no mass tourism. Here we will have the opportunity to truly experience the life of local people in these remote mountain villages. |
Day 4 | Day in Tuura-Suu. Hiking and/or horse riding. On horse we can reach the a mountains lake, which is a grazing place of yaks in the spring and late autumn. Back to the yurt camp. |
Day 5 | Drive from Tuura-Suu to the Sonun yurt camp at 1.650 m and situated in a semi-desert area on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. There is a stop in Bokonbaevo village to meet a man who hunts with eagles. In Sonun you can swim in the lake and/or to learn some traditional Kyrgyz cooking. Stay in yurts. |
Day 6 | By minibus to Bokonbaevo village, at the edge of the village you start a 8 km hike along a rarely used road through the mountains until you reach the Boz-Salkyn yurt camp in an alpine meadow at 2.550 m. |
Day 7 | In the morning a short hike down to the minibus and then continue to Bishkek. In the afternoon there will be time to visit the Osh Bazaar for shopping. Stay in the Umai Hotel. |
Day 8 | Transfer to Manas Airport and departure. |
Due to unforeseen circumstances, it might be necessary to make small changes in the program.
We ask for your understanding.

Mountain passes, bad tracks, off-road, and firm climbs over 3000 m characterize this route.
Not all slopes are steep, but some are very long and on dirt roads.
But it is worth the effort.
